TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Observer at Raung Mountain Observer Post, Burhan Alethea, said Raung Mountain has made a loud rumbling sound with a duration of less than a minute.  “The most often roar was heard between 1 to 2:30pm, Burhan told Tempo said Sunday, July 5.

The roar could be heard up to Rogojampi and Genteng Subdistrict, Banyuwangi, East Java with a distance of 30 kilometers.  Besides the roar, a 200-300m height smoke could also be seen.  The Intermediate and thick smokes were headed towards Banyuwangi city.

Meanwhile the tremor amplitude is at 28 millimeters, same as last Saturday.  The tremor showed signs of activities inside the magma.

According to Burhan, the roar and smokes coming out from the mountain showed a stombolian-type eruption.  The characteristics of strombolian is small eruptions but constantly emitting incandescent materials.

Raung Mountain’s eruption is still save for flight activities, but it still depends on the policy of each airline on whether or not they would pass above Raung Mountain.  “Each airline has its own safety standards,” said Burhan.

Raung Mountain’s volcanic activity has increased since June 21 2015.  Therefore, PVMBG has elevate the status of the mountain from alert II to alert III at 9am Monday, June 29.
