TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pekanbaru's Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spotted 182 hot spots appearances through Terra and Aqua satellite monitoring on Sumatra Island on Sunday, June 28, Antaranews reported. These hot spots are initial indication of land and forest fire.

“Some of the hot spots are concentrated in Riau Province which were detected at 05:00 WIB,” said Head of Pekanbaru BMKG, Sugarin, in Pekanbaru as quoted by Antaranews.

Detection with above 70 percent accuracy were seen in eight regions including Pelalawan, Rokan Hilir, Bengkalis, Siak, Kota Dumai, Indragiri Hulu, Indragiri Hilir, and Kampar.

“There are 39 hot spots in total detected in eight regions. The most hot spots detected are in Pelalawan and Rokan Hilir, with 12 and 10 hot spots each,” Sugarin explained.

According to Sugarin, the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) has attempted to make artificial rain but it was hampered by the dry weather in Riau. The weather engineering costs around Rp25 billion that was funded fully by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
