TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives has decided to include the revision of Law No.30/2002 on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in the National Legislation Program for 2015. This decision was made in a plenary meeting yesterday afternoon.
The DPR's chairman of legislation Sareh Wiyono said the government is committed to make repairs in the KPK Law, particularly with regard to prevent wiretapping from violating rights, synergizing prosecutors, establishing a regulatory body, rules on acting chiefs when the incumbent is absent, and strengthening collective collegial rules.
A total of 315 Council members who attended the meeting agreed to the revision.
Menwhile, KPK acting chief Taufiequrachman Ruki rejected the idea, saying it would emaciate the antigraft body. Acting deputy Johan Budi S.P. said the revision would reduce the KPK's authority.
"If the revision is intended to reduce our authority in wiretapping and prosecution; it will not to strengthen the Commission."
Johan says DPR's decision is contradictive to the parliament's remarks that the revision is done to strengthen the KPK.
"The President himself has stated he does not agree revision of the Law Commission," Johan said.
The DPR says it doesn't if Widodo seeks to retract the KPK Law revision from the Prolegnas discussion.
"But please remember that the president also has a legislative function," DPR deputy speaker Fahri Hamzah said.
Another lawmaker Ahmad Basarah said he will wait and see what "Jokowi's political will" would be like.
