TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has seized 7,762 packages of illegal imported foods circulating bereft of permits.
BPOM chief Roy Sparringa said the illegal foods were confiscated from a warehouse in Elang Laut Warehouse Complex, Block I, Pantai Indah Kapuk, North Jakarta.
“We seized them yesterday night at 11 p.m.,” he said in his office on Thursday, June 18, 2015.
Roy said the foods comprised processed foods for babies in the form of cereals, biscuits and snacks under the brand Gerber from the United States.
He added the BPOM also found 96 illegal cosmetics consisting of shampoo and baby soap from China with an estimated worth of Rp500 million. “Both products are sold online,” he said.
Roy said his agency was still checking the products to figure out whether they were fake, and that the BPOM would continue to coordinate with the Communication and Information Ministry since the products were sold online.
