TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is planning to establish an international-scale Islamic university. The university is intended for postgraduate studies only; providing master's (S2) and doctoral (S3) degrees.
Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Syaifuddin said that with a large number of Muslims population, Indonesia should be a model of Islamic learning for the citizens of the world.
"We should have had [a global-scale Islamic university] by now; especially since we have a long history and experience on the application of Islam in democracy and pluralism," Lukman said after meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Wednesday, June 17th, 2015.
Lukman said the concept of academic preparation was started in April this year by forming a special team consisting of academics and religious leaders.
