Indonesia Appointed as FAO Council

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has been named as member of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Council for the period of 2015-2018 in the plenary session of the organization, after it was formerly replaced by Malaysia.

The membership is effective since the conclusion of the FAO 39th conference in Rome, Italy.

First Secretary for Multilateral Affairs of the Indonesian Embassy in Rome Royhan N. Wahab told Antara on Saturday (13/6) that as many as 119 FAO member countries attended the plenary session.

Indonesia is one of the six Asian countries appointed as members of the Council.

Speaking separately, Secretary General of the Agriculture Ministry Hari Priyono, who led the Indonesian delegation in the conference, said that Indonesia’s appointment as member of the council is very important.

He also said that with the appointment, it will bigger opportunities for Indonesia in formulating a number of global policies in the fields food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture development that are in line with national interest.
