TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Al Araf, Program Director of Imparsial, a human rights watchdog, has asked President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to set up a high level of qualification in selecting the new Indonesian Army Joint Chief of Staff to replace General Moeldoko. "One of the criteria should be supportive towards human rights defenders," said Al Araf.
Al Araf said that people often accused the army of standing against human rights. Therefore, Al Araf said that the new Joint Chief of Staff must negate such image.
Moreover, Imparsial has asked President Jokowi to select a Joint Chief of Staff that has a spirit to reform the army, as well as committed to reforming the military court.
Incumbent Joint Chief of Staff General Moeldoko will retire on August 1, 2015. Moeldoko’s term began in August 30, 2013, as a replacement for former Joint Chief of Staff Admiral Agus Suhartono.
