TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Facebook officially launched Instant Article feature that feeds news from partner mass media. Among the partners are National Geographic, BBC, The Guardian, and Time.
“Facebook says its new Instant Articles load as much as ten times faster than standard mobile web articles.” The Verge reported.
The feature is currently available only on iOS-based devices but will be on Android soon. According to The Verge, the feature would enable users to access information while they’re on social media.
“For publishers though, it’s fraught with risk as they relinquish the distribution platform in order to meet readers where they are.”
‘Instant Article’ displays the media logo so that users can easily track the original website. A Follow icon also available for users to follow the media accounts to keep track on updated information.
“Perhaps the most important thing to note about Facebook’s instant articles is that they feel inevitable. Content hosted on apps rather than websites isn’t the future of media — it’s the present,” Casey Newton from The Verge wrote.
It is common nowadays that news are provided in app rather than website. Some popular apps include Flipboard, Zite, and Collectors. In Indonesia similar app called Kurio also exists. The app presents the news feed from several online media such as Kompas.com, Detik.com, and Liputan6.com. The app is available on iOS and Android.
“We want to facilitate movement that promote reading through applications,” said Kurio founder, David Wayne Ika. David raise his concerns about Indonesian internet users who are more engaged to entertainment apps such as YouTube and Facebook than news app.
