TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The ban on using ex-foreign ships applied by the Marine and Fisheries Ministry is considered to have failed in making new development in the government’s attempt on cracking down illegal fishing, according to Head of Traditional Fisherman Union (KNTI) Riza Damanik.

Riza claimed that law enforcement efforts often come without accompanied by attempts to improve local fishermen welfare. Riza also added that the 80 cases of illegal fishing involving ex-foreign ships had been discovered by the government.

Riza also urged the government to revoke the ban. Riza said that the ban had affected fishermen's welfare. "It also caused banks to become reluctant in disbursing loans to fishermen, because they assumed that [the fisheries sector] is not looking so good," Riza said.
