TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo has ordered a number of his ministries to accelerate the development of infrastructure projects, particularly ones in the transportation sector
The president said there are many projects that have taken a long preparation period without starting.
When opening a closed meeting at the presidential office yesterday, Widodo said that the mass rapid transit (MRT) is actually a 26-year-old project. The project planning took such a long time that it had only just begun late last year.
Widodo demanded simplification in the project planning and procurement process. He reminded his ministers to be wise in using foreign loans and avoid authority overlaps in executing projects.
The president had said that the eastern parts of Indonesia will be prioritized for infrastructure development. "Last Friday we had the groundbreaking for the construction of a port in Makassar and a 2,000-hectar industrial zone," he said.
