TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nine women were finally appointed by President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo to become members of a selection committee to select Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leaders. The members are from various background and skills.
They are the ones who are going to decide on the next KPK leaders, replacing the current leaders whose terms of office will expire in December.
Never in the history of this Republic that an important commission -- which determines of the fate of the nation -- has an all-female member.
Jokowi’s choice was indeed beyond expectation, but we have to admit that it’s refreshing.
Those who doubt – or dislike – Jokowi’s choice will probably underestimate the ability of those women.
Therefore, those nine women have to prove that they are not the wrong options.
Previously, the public was anxious over the names selected as member of the committee. A number of names were reportedly to have a strong chance to become the members.
In fact, they are known to be opposed to KPK or those who were once implicated in graft cases.
We can imagine of those people are among members of the committee.
KPK leadership may be filled by those who do not strengthen the KPK; rather by those who are allied with the corruptors.
Those nine women are no ordinary women. In fact, they are appointed from 40 names.
The nine members of the selection committee are Destri Damayanti, economist (commission chairwoman), Enny Nurbaningsih, constitutional law expert (deputy chairperson), Criminal law expert Harkristuti Harkrinsowo, IT expert Betty Alisjahbana, Criminal law expert Yenti Garnasih, Psychologist Supra Wimbarti, Public administration expert Natalia Subagyo, Law expert Diani Sadiawati, Sociologist Meuthia Ganie Rochman.
With various backgrounds and skills, this team is really rich with perspectives.
Therefore, the committee is expected to select candidates of KPK leaders whose integrity is beyond doubt. Those who never give up and are not afraid to fight against corruptors. Those with a strong mentality to fight against pressures and can resist intimidation or intervention.
We hope that the committee that consists of those members with various background and skill can find and select such people.
In accordance with the Law on KPK, the committee must propose 10 candidates.
The candidates are then proposed to the House of Representatives, who will later select them into five candidates and then name a chairman and a deputy chairman of KPK.
Previously, the House of Representatives has already conducted a fit and proper test to two KPK commissioner candidates Busyro Muqqodas and Robby Aryabrata.
However, the House postponed it to add them in the selection in December. So, the task of the committee this times is only proposing 8 candidates.
We hope that the committee will not only still and wait for candidates to apply rather, we hope they will hunt for candidates who are really suitable to become KPK leaders.
Thus, we will get candidates who are really suitable to lead the KPK.
We hope that KPK leaders proposed those women will be the dream team of KPK.
