TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Natsir Mansyur, the deputy chairman for trade, distributions and logistics at the Indonesian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) viewed that political motives were behind the rumors surrounding the alarming synthetic rice distribution, since the cost to produce plastic rice was higher than that of organic rice.
“Mixing [the organic rice] with more expensive goods is not reasonable,” Natsir said on the sidelines of Trade & Investment Forum: East Indonesian Regions at Hotel Borobudur, Jakarta, on Monday, May 25, 2015.
According to Natsir, if the motive was profit, vendors would mix the rice with cheaper products, such as corn or other kinds of rice.
Natsir added that plastic rice would not have to be imported since machines to produce plastic grains were quite easy to find.
“I don’t know whether the plastic rice was imported or produced domestically. The technology is quite common and simple,” he said.
