TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) has urged the police to thoroughly investigate the murder of environmental activist Jopi Teguh Lesmana Peranginangin at Venue bar and lounge, South Jakarta, on Saturday, May 23, 2015.
Kontras deputy coordinator Chrisbiantoro said Jopi died after being stabbed in the back during a fight.
“Based on the facts that we gathered, Jopi’s stabbers shouted that he was a military personnel. Another witness said that Jopi was stabbed by using a bayonet knife,” Chrisbiantoro said in a press release.
Chrisbiantoro explained that Jopi’s stabbing was a violation against a person’s right to live as guaranteed by Article 3 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Chrisbiantoro added that the action would be categorized as a crime as set forth by Article 338 in conjunction with Article 354 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code.
Jopi’s murder, Chrisbiantoro said, has added a long list of violence against activists and human rights defenders in Indonesia. Human Rights activists are protected by the 1998 Declaration of Human Rights Defender, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural rights.
