TEMPO.CO, Samarinda – Aziz Syamsuddin, the speaker of the House's Commission III overseeing legal affairs, said terrorism stemmed from lack of welfare and unfair acts.
“Unfair actions can take place anywhere, including from law enforcers. So if everything runs on its track, the people will prosper. If they are prosperous, they won’t become terrorists,” he said in Samarinda, East Kalimantan on Thursday.
Aziz made the statement when becoming a keynote speaker in the Coordination Meeting for Terrorism Law Enforcement Institutions at the East Kalimantan Governor office, which was attended by personnel from the local police, the court and the public prosecutor’s office.
Aziz said weak and discriminative law enforcement also had the potential to spark terrorism, thus he called on all law enforcers to act fairly.
Aziz added that many retired personnel from the police and the public prosecutor’s office had become commissioners of mining companies—one of the reasons why many cases involving these companies have been left untouched by law enforcers.
