Indonesia's LED Lamp Production only Reaches 50 Percent

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The capability of Indonesia's lighting industry to produce LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps had only reached 50 percent, according to John Manoppo, chairman of the Indonesian Electrical Lighting Industry Association (Aperlindo).
"We are actually capable of producing our own LED lamps. We're only hampered by high-tech technology," said Manoppo on Thursday, May 21, 2015.
Manoppo said Indonesia can produce the required materials to make LED lamps domestically. However, there are parts, such as lamp emitter components, that still need to be imported. As a result, prices of good quality LED lamps in Indonesia are considerably expensive at around Rp 50,000 for a three-watt LED lamp.
Manoppo said compared to other types of lamps, such as energy-saving lamps (LHE), LED lamps have lower electricity consumption. "They are also environmentally friendly, different from LHE that is said to contain mercury," Manoppo said.
Eventhough Indonesia is not yet able to fully produce LED lamps, Manoppo hoped that people will shift from LHE to LED. "LED will be developed, but everything needs process. For consumers, we aim to reach one million LED lamp users," said Manoppo.
