BI Gov Wants Local Bankers to 'Infiltrate' Foreign Banks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) wants banks operating in Indonesia to be led by Indonesians. BI Governor Agus DW Martowardojo said Indonesia's banking industry is currently filled with banking leaders of foreign nationals.
That's why, he said, he wants Indonesian bankers joined in the Indonesian Bankers Association (IBI) to "infiltrate" foreign banks.
"At least the commissioners and chairmen must be Indonesian citizens. This is something we need to push for so that Indonesian banks will be able to compete with foreign bankers by the time the AEAN Economic Community (AEC) starts," he said in Jakarta, Thursday, as reported by Bisnis.com.
The fact that there are so many local banks helmed by foreign bankers is a challenge the state must face.
"There are 118 banks in the industry, many of which have become medium major banks. If bankers in IBI cannot be CEOs or commissioners of banks operating in Indonesia; this is indeed a setback. Of course bankers who are joined in IBI have good competence," said Agus.
