TEMPO.CO, Banda Aceh - TNI commander Gen. Moeldoko said that Rohingya immigrants stranded in Indonesia must be treated properly as refugees. "Those refugees have entered our territory and must be treated as such. There is a law for this, it is international law," said Moeldoko during his visit to Aceh on Thursday, May 21, 2105.
According to Moeldoko, refugees such as the Rohingyas must be treated humanely on humanitarian grounds. Moeldoko said that the TNI will comply the with Foreign Minister's policy to accommodate Rohingya refugees in Indonesia for a while.
However, according to Moeldoko, the TNI will continue to protect the territorial integrity of Indonesia from illegal immigrants. "Principally, we are tasked to maintain the sovereignty of Indonesia and forbid anyone from entering," said Moeldoko.
Moeldoko arrived in Aceh on Thursday, May 21, 2015, and directly went to Rondo Island to inaugurate the statue of national hero, Tengky Umar. Moeldoko returned to Banda Aceh and held a meeting with the Aceh Government and public figures at Governor's Pavilion.
