TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Teguh Juwarno, a House lawmaker from the National Mandate Party (PAN) faction, has described the spread of rice made of plastic in Bekasi as a food terror. "The perpetrators, importers and producers must be prosecuted as terrorists," said Teguh on Wednesday.
Teguh said rice was an irreplaceable and strategic basic food commodity and the spread of plastic rice could also happen in Central Java or other regions.
The Bekasi City Government previously said they would conduct laboratory testing on rice allegedly made of plastics following concerns on the circulation of plastic rice. "We took some samples,"said Herbet Panjaitan, the head of trade at the Bekasi Industry Agency, on Tuesday.
Herbet said the rice was seized from a rice shop at Mutiara Gading Timur Market, Mustika Jaya district. The inspection was carried out after his agency received information from residents that there was rice allegedly made of plastic.
The latest results of the investigation into the case revealed the rice was bought from a rice agent in Pasar Baru, Bekasi that obtained it from Karawang, West Java.
