TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jayaraya Diving Club (JDC) is planting millions of mangrove seedlings which is a nature reserve of Karya Island in Panggang Island, Thousand Islands.
Deputy Regent of Thousand Islands, Budi Utomo, who also serves as Chairman of Jaya Raya Diving Club, disclosed the planting is a form of the environmental awareness.
“Such planting can transform Karya Island region into a vegetation coastal residential that could be ecological city,” he stated, Tuesday.
Thousand Islands Regent Tri Djoko Sri Margianto assessed the planting was initiated by Seribu Islands Administration as one form of conservation and program.
"Mangrove is used as the spawning site for fish, crab, and so on. In future, if it is developed well, this will be fish breeding and ecosystem sites," he expressed.
Margianto added another mangrove function is also able to restrain coastal abrasion and breakwater or wave waters.
“Through this event, hopefully the Thousand Islands will be a great potential coastal area,” he finished.
"Through this mangrove planting, it is hoped can become a benchmark in the future and Thousand Islands becomes a great potential coastal area," he disclosed.
