General Motors' Oshawa Plant to Lose 1,000 Jobs

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - General Motors (GM) will be cutting at least 1,000 of its employees in Oshawa assembly factory in Canada, as a result of Chevrolet Camaro’s production transfer to an assembly facility in Michigan, U.S.
Camaro’s production in Canada will end this upcoming November and the factory that currently has 3,600 employees will be reduced to 2,600 once the Camaro is no longer produced there.
GM has announced a new investment for the North America worth US$5,4 billion and will focus on the U.S. manufacturing which will open 650 new jobs.
The factory in Canada will still be making five GM vehicles including Chevy Impala, Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS, Chevy Equinox and Impala Limited.
According to Inautonews, GM is also offering an incentive pension for 2,100 employees as the impact of the job cuts.
GM said its still committed to Canada and the latest announcement said that GM will be investing heavily of US$800 million for the Canadian Automotive Manufacturing Inc in Ingersoll, Ontario.
The largest automotive maker in the U.S. and world’s third largest is also considering to halt productions in Venezuela beginnin this July to reduce losses in the country.
