TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Expert of earthquake, Suharjono says the 7.9 magnitude quake that hit Nepal on Saturday have small chance to give direct impact on Indonesia. He advises people not to panic and only referring to official information issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysic Agency (BMKG).
“Nepal quake will not give direct impact because the plate is too far apart,” Suharjono said when contacted by Tempo.
Suharjono further explained that theoritically, when one plate of the earth shaken, the balance of the whole earth’s plates will be affected. But he convinced that there is nothing to worry about becuase it happens naturally.
After the Nepal quake, informations that are not issued by BMKG are spread over online media that warns people for possible quake hitting Sumatra. For example, the twitter account @InfoSeismic tweeted : “After 7.9 Magnitude in Nepal, Sumatran Seismic Highly Increased-Overscale. Stay Alert #efekdomino #Sumatera”.
The posting, alongwith a photo of graphic indicating increased tremor, was re-tweeted 29 times in one hour.
“Let’s refer only to the government’s release,” Sujono added.
