TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Medan Fashion Culture Festival (MFCF) has officially kicked start on Thursday, April 23 to promote designs made of woven fabrics, especially those originating from North Sumatra such as Malayan songket and Ulos. As many as 25 Indonesian designers exhibited their designs at the opening event.
“As North Sumatran, I want to give something valuable for my own homeland. This is the dream of me and my friends to support it,” said designer and MFCF initiator Torang Sitorus.
Torang has proven his love to North Sumatran woven fabrics by opening a first museum for North Sumatran traditional fabrics in Medan. The museum is called Sumatra Loom Gallery.
“I really want for North Sumatra people not forgetting the authentic culture product. The designs by 25 designers will be sold in Parkson, Center Point Mall. We also offer special discount until the end of the event on Sunday. Hopefully MFCF can be made an annual event,” Torang added.
“The loom fabric has so far been used only in cultural events. But we can use it more often to attend parties, for example. This is also an effort to increase economy of loom and ulos makers.”
