Rupiah May Still Go Beyond 13,300 per US$

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The rupiah's recent gain on the greenback is expected not to last. The rupiah could break through the Rp13,300 per US dollar threshold following The Fed Rate hike plan sentiment, which is estimated to resurface in Q4, Mandiri Sekuritas economist Aldian Taloputra says.
On the contrary, Mandiri Sekuritas' equity researcher chief John Rachmat believes the rupiah will strengthen to Rp12,913 per US dollar by the end of the year. His confidence stems from the balance of payments' deficit that continues to decline, ad the inflation rates that are kept under control.
However, he admits that the rupiah is still faced with external sentiments. The Fed Rate hike plan and the large number of foreign investors trading in US dollar make the rupiah prone to correction despite solid domestic fundamentals.
The rupiah hit a low rate of Rp13,303 rupiah per US dollar on March 16, the lowest exchange rate since 1998. Bank Indonesia's middle rate on Friday last week saw the rupiah traded at Rp12,941 per US dollar.
