Lawmakers Appoint New BI Deputy Governor

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – House lawmakers have selected Erwin Rijanto as the new Bank Indonesia (BI) deputy governor, replacing Halim Alamsyah, who is due to retire mid-year.
Erwin was selected during a fit-and-proper test through a voting mechanism by lawmakers of the House’s Commission XI overseeing finance, banking and national development planning.
The voting was carried out in a closed session, yet the vote tally was done in an open one, with results showing Erwin Rijanto finished first with 42 votes, followed by Dody Budi Waluyo with five votes, and Hendy Sulistiowati in the last place with two votes. Four votes were declared invalid.
“There was no acclamation, the commission decided to proceed with voting,” said commission chair Fadel Muhammad after questioning the three candidates.
He said the voting involved all 53 commission members, and that the House Steering Committee would deliberate the appointment further to be proposed at a plenary meeting slated for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2015.
“According to the commission, Pak Erwin is seasoned both in domestic and overseas affairs,” he said after the voting concluded.
Erwin was previously the central bank’s executive director for the department of surveillance of financial system. Dody is the executive director for strategic management and governance department, and Hendy the executive director for statistics department.
