TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government of Iraq has expressed its interest to strengthen economic ties with Indonesia in the energy sector. Iraqi Foreign Affairs Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said both countries must improve the bilateral relationship based on the characteristics of each nation.
“First, [we need] to improve economic ties since Indonesia is a productive country,” Mr. al-Jafaari said after a bilateral meeting with Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi on Sunday, April 19, 2015.
Indonesian Ambassador to Iraq Safzen Noedin explained that the meeting, held on the sideline of the 60th Asia-Africa Commemorative Summit, did not discuss the cooperation in detail.
“The meeting did not discuss the cooperation details, but the discussion was focused on the energy sector, particularly oil,” Safzen said.
In 2013 and 2014, Indonesia imported crude oil from Middle Eastern countries with a contract of 35,000 barrels per day or about 1 million barrels per month. Iraq’s production capacity reached 4 million barrels per day targeting to export 75 percent of the national production.
