TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister A. M. Fachir said President Joko Widodo had ordered the rescue of 36 Indonesians facing death sentences in Saudi Arabia. “One of the most important things is mediation the victims' families,” Fachir said on Friday.
According to Fachir, the mediation was necessary to free the Indonesians on death row as Saudi judges took into account the mercy granted from the victims' families.
“We don’t want similar incidents to recur,” said Fachir.
Saudi Arabia has executed two Indonesian inmates without notifying the Indonesian government. Siti Zaenab binti Duhir, 47, a migrant worker from Bangkalan, was executed on Tuesday, while Karni binti Medi Tarsim was put to death two days later.
Siti was convicted in the murder of her employe’s wife, Nourah binto Abdullah Duhem al Maruba, in 1999, while Karni was condemned for killing her employer's four year-old child in 2013.
