TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - INTERPOL has established its' presence in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) by opening the INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI) in Singapore on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, which is a high tech facility that aims to complement ASEAN's efforts in combatting cyber crime in the region.
According to INTERPOL, the IGCI is expected to become a centre of excellence that will pool expertise and resources to combat cybercrime, seeks to identify trends, build capacity and foster cooperation among all stakeholders, including law enforcement, the private sector and the academia in the fight against this transnational threat.
The inauguration of the facility was attended by ASEAN's Secretary General H.E. Le Luong Minh, who delivered his remarks during a Ministerial Session prior to the official inauguration of the facility. "More attention and resources are being devoted to combatting cyber crime in the region," he said, before adding that the establishment reflects the ongoing progress in the area, which has continued despite the challenges resulting from the varying levels of technological advancement and knowledge, and law enforcement capabilities in ASEAN Member States.
"All ASEAN Member States have established Computer Emergency Response Teams and some Member States have established national authorities on cyber security. Good relations have also been established between the public and private sectors, an imperative step in combating cybercrime," added Secretary General Minh.
