TEMPO.CO, Washington – Indonesian coffee has gained popularity at the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) event held from April 9-12, 2015 in Seattle, the United States. At the event, Indonesia booked a total transaction of US$6.5 million.
“The total transaction is quite favorable. We’re expecting other transactions will follow [after the event],” Ni Made Ayu Marthini, the Indonesian commercial attaché, said on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 in Washington D.C.
According to Made, Indonesia introduced 39 coffee variants at the event, in addition to their derivative products, establishing the country as the world’s coffee paradise. Furthermore, visitors were also interested in food service products, such as paper cups, instant tea and coffee leaves.
Given the visitors’ enthusiasm, Indonesia has planned to take another part at the 28th SCAA in Atlanta next year.
“Hopefully Indonesia will be able to increase its exports, not only of coffee beans but also other innovative products, such as roasting machines and coffee makers,” Made said.
Data from the U.S. Department of Commerce revealed that the import value of coffee in the U.S. stood at US$323.10 million last year, increasing from US$290.34 million in 2013. Indonesia is the sixth largest coffee exporter after Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, Canada and Guatemala. The market share for Indonesian coffee currently stands at 5.49 percent.
