TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - East Java Governor Soekarwo claimed that the government has attempted to save the life of a migrant worker from Bangkalan, Siti Zainab binti Duhri, who was executed on Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Siti Zainab was executed after spending 16 years in Saudi Arabian prison for killing her employer's wife in 1999.
"The Foreign Affair Minister has prepared the diyat [blood money]," Soekarwo said, adding that the amount of diyat was 600,000 Riyal.
In addition, three Indonesian presidents namely Abdurrahman Wahid (2000), Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (2011), and Joko Widodo (2015) had sent diplomatic letters to the king of Saudi hoping for a pardon for Zainab.
"[However], Saudi law regulates that family of the victim must also agree to the pardon," Soekarwo added.
