Forestry Ministry Increases Target for Wild Life Population

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Environment and Forestry Ministry is aiming to add 10 percent more of population of 25 protected species as one of the target for Indonesia-United States cooperation in protecting the wild life.
“Five years back, the target was only 3 percent of 15 species, now it is increased. We do it by maintaining the wild life habitation as well as breeding them,” said Bambang Supriyanto, the Forestry Ministry’s Director of Environmental Services and Utilization of Conservation Areas and Protected Forests in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted by Antara News.
The government also required 10 percent of the result of the breeding is released to the wild.
“The target is expected to be achieved in five years, starting from this year.”
One more preservation area in Tambora, East Nusa Tenggara is added to increase the effectiveness of preservation area management.
“From all of the preservation area units, 70 percent of them are effectively functioning. They have rangers, offices, people-based security and also alternative-income program for the people,” Bambang added.
The Tambora reservation area will be inaugurated by President Joko Widodo this month.
