Bappenas Supports Central Kalimantan PLTU Development

TEMPO.CO, Palangkaraya - National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) chief Andrinof Chaniago said he supported the planned development of a power plant by Central Kalimantan Governor Agustin Teras Narang near a coal mine in Sumarara regency.

Andrinof said everything would need electricity and without which there would be no port and industrialization.

Previously, Central Kalimantan Governor Agustin Teras Narang presented a series of ongoing projects and those upcoming in his province. The governor said he was now weighing possible cooperation with Central Java to construct a steam-fueled power plant (PLTU.

Later, some of the electricity will be supplied to Central Java through underwater cables.

The PLTU will be located in Sumarara regency near a coal mine. “The cost is much cheaper because there will be no cost to transport coals,” said Teras Narang.

The governor said he chose the location because it was relatively closer to Jepara, Central Java, and that power cables would be connected from Sukamara to Central Java through Jepara. He added the electricity could also be channeled to other provinces, such as East Java, in the case of an oversupply.

Andrinof hoped Central Kalimantan would have ample electricity following the existence of the PLTU. He said in the future, Central Kalimantan’s potential resources, such as coal, could spur the province's economic growth to around eight percent.
