TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Unlike its initial prediction, electricity load was increased on 'Earth Hour', last Saturday, in Java, Madura, and Bali. It was mostly because the excessive use of Air Conditioner (AC) units when the lights went off for an hour.
"AC consumes more electricity compared to lights and other electronic devices," said Spokesman of the National Electricity Company, Agus Trimukti.
PLN noted that electricity load in Java, Madura, and Bali on Saturday reached 19,680 megawatt (MW), or increasing 385 MW (1.99 percent) compared to the same hour the week before. As for Jakarta, the state was different because the amount dropped by 165 MW (4.73 percent).
Agus claimed that Earth Hour effectiveness this year is less significant compared to that of last year, with lesser participation from the society. "The people need education on saving electricity during Earth Hour," he said.
Earth Hour is a global movement, brought by the World Wildlife Fund since 2007. The program is held at the last Saturday of March, each year.
