TEMPO.CO, Bandung – West Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Mochamad Iriawan said the police and the Army would deploy at least 30 snipers to secure the upcoming 60th anniversary event of the Asia-Africa Conference (AAC) in Bandung, West Java.

“Snipers have been placed on a number of tall buildings,” Iriawan said after a gathering with chief editors and mass media bureau heads in Bandung, West Java on Monday, March 30, 2015.

Iriawan hoped the event would proceed like clockwork, allowing for the prestigious nature of the event to the country. “Ninety seven percent of invited heads of state [have confirmed attendance], including those from China and North Korea,” he said.

Iriawan added security measures—including raids and crackdowns—had rolled out long before the event’s peak on April 24, 2014. “Operations against crimes that led to heightened security to safeguard the Asia-Africa Conference have been carried out,” he said, adding that the city, particularly its first security ring in the vicinity of Merdeka Building, would be sterilized during the event.

He said he would also beef up security at a number of airports and turnpikes with access to Bandung. Iriawan said the police and the military would deploy some 9,700 joint personnel to secure the event. “In overall, we are ready to protect [the event],” he said.

The 60th anniversary event of the Asia-Africa Conference is slated for April19-24 in Jakarta and Bandung. Around 109 heads of state are scheduled to attend the event.
