TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bandung Mayor Ridwan “Emil” Kamil suggested the people of Bandung not to consume rice every Monday starting today, March 30.
Ridwan said that it is in accordance to a program by the West Java Provincial Government, as also supported by Bandung City Administration. The program to cut down rice consumption was based on the fact that people of Indonesia consume twice the rice portion that other nations consume. "Compared to Japan and Malaysia, we are a big spender," said Emil.
The excessive consumption of rice impacts domestic food crisis. Emil said that the government is planning to add more rice import from Thailand and Vietnam. Therefore, Bandung City Administration plans to change rice consuming habit by adding more cassava supply from farmers, in which Emil claimed that the supply is ready.
"I was given a tester on rice made of cassava. It tasted different, but we can get used to it," said Emil.
