TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Earth Hour Community of Yogyakarta will turn off lights simultaneously tonight, Saturday, March 28, to celebrate the 7th World’s Earth Hour. The movement will engage Yogyakarta City Administration, Sleman Regency, Kulonprogo Regency, and communities across Yogyakarta to participate in turning off their electricity for one hour.
“The simultaneous lights-off will be started from 20:30 until 21:30 local time,” said Angelina Indra, the Public Relation Coordinator of Earth Hour Yogyakarta to Tempo on Friday, March 2015.
The Earth Hour is a symbolic action to campaign for energy-saving to reduce bad impact of climate changes. In Yogyakarta, the ceremonial event will be centered at Realindo open field of Sanata Dharma University. Angelina added that his team will be coordinating with the state-owned electricity company (PLN) to count how much energy is saved after the one-hour lights-off.
In addition to that, there will be a 7K night run that involves Playon-Jogja community. The 7K run action is held to mark 7 important environmental issues happening in Indonesia this year including issues in marine and coastal zone (Bali and Nusa Tenggara), deforestation (Kalimantan), biodiversity (Sumatra), wastes (Sulawesi), water and river (East Java), public transportation (Yogyakarta and Central Java) and energy (Greater Jakarta Area).
