TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 33 people die daily in the country of drug abuse—the figure stemmed from the 12,044 people who died last year of narcotics, according to Slamet Pribadi, a spokesman with the National Anti-narcotics Agency.
“The estimated state losses reach Rp63.1 trillion,” Slamet said after the REHAB 100 Thousand Drug Abusers Drive at Campus C of Airlangga University on Thursday, March 26, 2015.
Slamet added that the number of drug abusers in the nation in 2014 reached four million, with ages from 10-59.
He said most of the drug addicts were men (74.5 percent) while the rest were women, and that the amount of narcotics involved in 2014 saw 158 million gr of marijuana, 219 million gr or crystal meth and 14 million ecstasy pills.
He said the BNN immediately teamed up with other government institutions to bring down the figure following President Joko Widodo’s statement that the country was under a narcotics emergency.
He added among the institutions were the Health Ministry, the Social Affairs Ministry, the Justice and Human Rights Ministry and the Home Affairs Ministry. “This rehab program came from us,” he said.
Slamet confirmed that narcotics circulation in the country was alarming—with all regencies and cities in the country’s 33 provinces recording narcotics cases. “No region is free from narcotics,” said BNN deputy for rehab, Susanti Lengkon.
