TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian female police officers (polwan) could now officially wear their hijab while on duty. The decree was conveyed through an official letter with the registration number 245/III/2015, signed by the Indonesian Police Chief (Kapolri) and dated March 25, 2015.
The letter contains some changes to a previous letter, registered under the number SKEP/702/IX/2005, signed by the previous Kapolri, dated September 30, 2005, which regulates the use of official Indonesian Police (Polri) uniform by Polri members and other civil servants within Polri's bureacratic structure.
The former decree - which allowed Aceh's polwans to cover up with a hijab - is now extended to include other Muslim polwans who wishes to use their hijab while on duty, as long as their hijab meets the requirements set out in the decree - plain, with no embellishments, and in the same shade as their official duty uniform.
Through a statement released on the Facebook page of Polri Headquarter's Public Relations Division, dark brown hijab is to be worn by those whose uniforms are brown, as well as by the Mobile Brigade officers, grey hijab is to be worn by the Choir. Black hijab is to be worn in any other occasions - except during sporting and exercise activities and for Intelligence, Criminal Investigation, and Security Division staff members, where the color of the hijab is to be matched with the color of their trousers.
Those who chose to wear the hijab will be allowed to wear trousers - as opposed to the usual skirt - which are to be paired with black ankle boots and black socks.
