TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Electricity usage in Bali drastically dropped during the observance of Nyepi Day, the Balinese Hindu Day of Silence, which fell on Saturday, March 21, 2015.
"The peak usage happened at 2:30pm local time, and it dropped by 165.9 Mega Watt compared to the one last week, which reached 637.4 MW," said Bambang Dwiyanto, Senior Manager of Corporate Communication of State-owned Electricity Company Manager Senior PT PLN in a written statement.
In the evening, Bambang added, peak usage happened at 7pm local time that reached 478.7 MW or dropped by 216.5 mega watt compared to the last week usage that reached 695.2 mega watt.
Bambang added that the drop in electricity usage happened because Hindus, which make up the majority of the Balinese population, did not do any other activities aside from ritual religious activities, which do not need electricity in a big amount.
"The drop in the demand for electricity significantly helped reducing the burden of power plants that have to provide electricity every day,” he said.
