TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, proposed that political parties should be provided with a Rp1 trillion subsidy to minimize potential corruption.
"If necessary, the government should fund all political parties for, among others, operational, caderization and preparation for elections," said Tjahjo on Monday, March 9, 2015.
Tjahjo delivered the notion after observing a decrease in public confidence towards political parties caused by corruption. "Funding from the government is needed so that cadres don't have to look for other sources of funding," said Tjahjo.
Tjahjo puts China as an example where the entire budget of political parties comes from the government. However, Tjahjo said that such system must be accompanied by firm sanctions.
"The law must be strengthened so that when a party violates the law, it can be disbanded," he said.
