TEMPO.CO, Canberra - Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott asserted that the impending execution of Bali Nine ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran would be the greatest betrayal of Indonesia’s national interest.
As quoted from The Australia on Thursday, speaking to Australia’s parliament, Abbott exuded his harsh criticism towards the Indonesian government and hoped the two Australians could be released.
He said Australia wanted the best relations with Indonesia and warned the execution could taint the ties between both countries.
He also called on Indonesia to cancel the death penalty and rehabilitate the two convicts as allowed by Indonesia's legal system.
“As somebody who wants nothing but good for Indonesia, as a government, as a parliament that wants nothing but good for Indonesia, we are speaking as one united voice publicly and privately in every way we can: pull back from this brink. Pull back from this brink,” said Abbott.
“Don’t just realize what is in your own best interests. But realize what is in your own best values.”
