TEMPO.CO, Banyuwangi - Suseno Sukoyono, the head of human resources development at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, said that Banyuwangi produced the best quality "sidat" fish (ordo Anguilliformes) in Indonesia. Sidat fish is the most expensive commodity since the price could reach Rp 300,000 (around US$23) per kilogram.
"But the commodity is not well-developed in Indonesia," Suseno said on Friday, March 6, 2015.
PT Iroha Sidat Indonesia, a sidat fish exporter company, annualy exports 120 to 250 tons of sidat fish from Banywangi to Japan. Iroha manager Tri Djoko Narbuko, said that the figure was considerably small since it took a relatively long time to cultivate the fish before it can be exported.
"Sidat fish can be harvested after 18 months," Tri Djoko said.
Abdul Kodir, Chairman of the East Java Sidat Association, said that the price for sidat fish in the domestic market can reach up to Rp 155,000 (around US$12) per kilogram, higher compared to the prices of shrimp or grouper fish.
