TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Yugi Prayanto, the deputy chairman for maritime affairs and fisheries at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), has underscored the importance of training for human resources as one of the crucial elements to improve the national maritime industry.
“It’s important to anticipate [Maritime Affairs and Fisheries] Ministry’s regulation that bans foreign ships,” he said at his office on Monday, March 2, 2015.
According to Yugi, the improvement is not limited to skills and activities of traditional fishing, but also to fish and shrimp farming.
Yugi added that technical skills in boat-driving and machinery are also key, and that fishermen were expected to upgrade their skill and know-how as crewmembers, captains or technician heads.
Hamdani, a member of the fisheries affairs commission at the House of Reprsentatives, said the government would support the program, adding that the House had approved the allocation of Rp10.5 trillion (US$875 million) to finance the program. The government will distribute the funds to fishery schools and shipping polytechnics.
