TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former North Maluku Governor Thaib Armaiyn has been declared as a fugitive for trying to avoid police summons for three times.
The National Police’s Criminal Investigations Directorate (Bareskrim) named Thaib as a fugitive last week.
Thaib was named as a suspect in the graft case connected to the 2004 North Maluku Regional Budget since 2012. He was suspected to be implicated in the misappropriation of the 2004 regional budget of the province, which allegedly brough the country Rp6.9 million in financial loses.
In a telegram sent to all regional police in Indonesia, Bareskrim instructed all regional police all cross Indonesia to join hands searching for Thaib.
In response to the instruction, North Maluku Regional Police has also set up a special team. North Maluku Reigonal Police Chief Brigadier General Sobri Effendi Surya said that the team special team consists of 12 personnel and they are from intelligence and criminal units.
He also said that the instruction to hunt Thaib had been disseminated to all resort police chiefs in North Maluku.
"The special team has tightened security in the entry and exit points in North Maluku,” he said on Saturday, 28 February 2015.
In the meantime, Abdulah Kahar, Thaib’s lawyer, was not immediately available for comments.
For the record, Thaib Armaiyn was elected as governor with his running mate Abdul Ghani Kasuba for the period of 2008-2013.
