TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an emergency session on Friday to discuss the ceasefire agreement in eastern Ukraine, which was showing promises of success, according to a diplomatic source.
France and Germany have asked the council of 15-nations to convene, in light of the plan to remove heavy artilleries from Ukraine's military frontline as the intensity of fighting between the warring factions begins to subside.
The meeting is the first UNSC session since it last met on February 17 to support the ceasefire agreement brokered by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leaders, as well as Germany, which was reached in Minsk, Belarus.
UNSC members are scheduled to hear testimonies from two representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) regarding the situation on the ground, before convening for a further closed session.
The highest authorities in the UN have met 30 times to discuss the Ukraine conflict, which has claimed the lives of 5,800 people since the fighting began in April 2014, reported AFP.
