Bandung to Break World Record with Angklung Performance at AAC

TEMPO.CO, Bandung – The Bandung city government is gearing up to break the world record by involving 20,000 people to play angklung to welcome the 60th anniversary of the Asia-Africa Conference in the city on April 24.
Angklung is a traditional music instrument from West Java and world heritage of Indonesia. The angklung performance is aimed at creating a historical moment for the nation that will put the nation in the global spotlight.
“This will break the world record,” said Bandung government spokesperson Aos W. Bintang on Tuesday.
The angklung performance, themed “Alunkan Angklungmu di Guiness World of Record Bandung Lautan Angklung” (Play Your Angklung at Guiness World of Record Bandung Sea of Angklung), will be held at the Siliwangi Stadium on April 25, a day after the conference.
According to Aos, participants that will play angklung in the event hailed from various backgrounds, such as students, civil servants, private employees, military, police, laborers, humanists, artists and representatives of each participating country. The songs to play are Manuk Dadali and Halo-Halo Bandung.
Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil said the angklung performance was a part of the traditional concept for the conference. “The concept is 60 percent traditional and 40 percent for creativity related to Asia and Africa to make the event more colorful,” he said.
Besides the angklung performance, a series of events dubbed the Asia Africa Carnival will be held from April 21-27, featuring Culture Break, Solidarity Day (Tribute to Soekarno and Mandela), Photo Exhibition of AAC, Festival of Nations and Asian African Parade.
