TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chief of the Judicial Commission, Abbas Said, claimed that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) can file an appeal against Judge Sarpin Rizaldi's verdict in Budi Gunawan's preliminary trial. Earlier today, Sarpin issued a verdict that stated that Budi Gunawan's appointment as a suspect by the KPK is not valid.
Abbas said that the verdict is absolute and may not be challenged. However, for the sake of justice, Abbas urged the KPK to file a cassation request to the Supreme Court.
Abbas said that the Judicial Commission will hold an internal meeting to discuss the trial. The commission will also accept public reports related to Judge Sarpin. "We will check and confirm the reports," he said.
However, Abbas refused to provide further comments on Sarpin, who is known for making a number of controversial verdicts. The Judicial Commission also stated that it will not intervene with the verdict's substance because it is the authority of the Supreme Court to do so.
