TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The No. 1 tennis player Serena Williams proved her consistent domination over Maria Sharapova of Russia as she beat the world No. 2 at the final of 2015 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Saturday 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Serena, whose record now equal to the American legendary tennis player Helen Wills who played in 1920s, survived both Sharapova and a hacking cough from cold. The American, however, still managed to endure the battle and raised her 19th grand slam trophy, setting a record above the career records of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.
"I'm so honored to be here and to hold this 19th trophy," the 33-year-old Williams said as quoted by AP.
"I didn't think it would happen this fast, to be honest, but it feels really good."
Serena also congratulates Maria Sharapova for giving her a tough fight.
"I went on the court with a ball and a racket and a hope. It's inspiring for those of you out there who want to be something or for whatever you want to do when you grow up. You never know who you're going to inspire; so I'm so honored. I have to congratulate Maria. She really, really pushed me tonight."
