Indonesia Rejects Imported Rice

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said that he had rejected offers of imported rice from Thailand and Japan.
He said that the rejection was part of the commitment to reach food self-sufficiency in the next three years as announced by President Joko Widodo.
Amran said that the offer came during his working visit to Thailand. He said that he was offered with rice priced Rp4,000 per kilogram and it will be directly sent to Indonesia. He also said that Japan also offered to export rice to Indonesia but the government refused the offer as well.
In the meantime, Bojonegoro regent Suyoto said that Bojonegoro hoped to become the producer of food and energy in Indonesia.
Especially for food, he said that his region aims to produce 1.5 tons of rice in the next three years, with the current production reaching 860,000 tons of milled rice grain.
To reach the goal, the said that Bojonegoro government has built supporting infrastructures such as irrigation systems, and dams.
