Chinese Schools Banned from Promoting "Western Values"

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China plans to ban materials which "promote Western values" from being delivered in Chinese classrooms, said Chinese Minister for Education Yuan Guiren.

"We need to regulate the flow of materials which propagates Western into our syllabus, and we cannot let such materials proliferate in our classrooms," said Yuan, as quoted by Xinhua.

The ruling Communist Party in China has since long stood against Western values - including concepts such as multi-party democracy and universal human rights. Such attempt to control the national discourse has intensified under President Xi Jinping, who is known to have tighten the government's grip over the internet, media outlets, issues relating to dissidents, and increased ideological education in universities.

"We cannot let such attacks undermined the good name of our party leaders and discredit the value of socialism in classrooms across our universities," said Yuan at a meeting which was attended by several high ranking officials from a number of renowned Chinese universities.

Previously in December 2014, Xi called for the intensification of ideological education in universities, as well as the promotion of Marxist studies.

In a recent edition of Quishi - a Communist Party journal that reflects the official stance of the Chinese Government - several renowned Chinese academic were accused of discrediting and undermining the state by promoting Western values through their work.
