TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti’s regulation has deterred poachers from entering the Indonesian territory. Four illegal ships with Indonesian identities have been seen hiding in Taiwan’s waters.
The four ships are Dofior 160, Fu Yuan Yu 209, Garuda Jaya 111 and one unnamed ship. “We want to announce internationally so that ships in foreign waters can also be captured,” said Susi on Friday.
Susi said the international society must know that those foreign ships had poached fish in the Indonesian territory.
Susi said she learned about the whereabouts of the four ships from the vessel monitoring system (VMS) signal recorded by the monitoring screen in her office. She added the VMS signal was turned on by fishermen on that ships, otherwise their operation would be deemed illegal.
Susi said ships without permits were now afraid to enter the nation's waters. “Just look at those ships, they are hiding in Taiwan. They must be illegal. If not, then why are they hiding?” she said. “They should be captured and sunk.”
